The Fish Shack
started out over 15 years ago in a back bedroom of our 100 year old house. We quickly
grew into a custom made 20' x 30' warehouse and became the largest indoor
tropical fish hatchery in Hawaii specializing in the spawning, artificial hatching and rearing of a dozen different kinds of freshwater angelfish which we sold throughout the state of Hawaii and on the US mainland.
We shut down the hatchery and decided to open a retail store in the summer of 1996. The name "The Fish Shack" was inspired by our original 400 sq. ft store at 714 Lower Main Street. The location was the old garage for the previous tenant's motorcycle shop and it was truly a "shack". With a lot of hard work and solid fish-keeping experience, we earned our title of "exotic ornamental fish specialists". In December of 2001, we jumped at the chance to move next door into a 5000 sq ft space
at 720 Lower Main Street.
In the summer of 2007, we made the big decision to focus entirely on the pond
and water garden side of our business. With that decision, we knew
we had to move to a location that offered more outdoor space for our waterlilies
and other aquatic plants. The space on Vevau St. in Kahului came up and
we jumped on the chance to be 100% outdoors and even more centrally located.
On January 2, 2008 we signed the lease on our new outdoor store in Kahului. We
officially opened our gate on Vevau St. on March 1, 2008.
